Beyond Space: featuring Carrie Mae Weems and the Carr Center Independent Scholars.

 October 19 – January 5

The Exhibit: “Beyond Space” is an exploration-through-exhibition, featuring the work of the Carr Center Independent Scholars, curated and led by Carr Center Resident Artist Carrie Mae Weems. The exhibition is the culminating effort of a 12 month mentorship and peer-to-peer guidance program featuring the work of early career artists and scholars from around the country. The exhibition explores the multidimensionality of space and spaces: their spirit, architecture, technology, memory, transgression, and Queering.

In conjunction with my dissertation research on the visual culture surrounding iconic mixed-race families in black history and culture, for “Beyond Space” I created an installation on the photographic representation of the Loving family of the Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court case that overturned anti-interracial marriage laws.

Read the Beyond Space Catalog

To accompany the Beyond Space exhibition, The Carr Center published a catalog that included accompanying essays and images. As part of my fellowship I managed the publication process, and contributed an essay titled “Photographing Loving” on the photographic representation of Mildred Loving, who is known for her role in helping overturn the ban on interracial marriage through the Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court case (1967).
